Mistah Rapsey is my name..
staying underground
is the experience..

I’ve been traveling since my youth searching for experiences of truth. An old soul back again to discover what I left uncovered. I love to love and live to laugh. Enrolled in a school called Knowledge of Self. Paying attention is my drug. Learning to live Life like music and flow with the rhythm, careful not to miss a beat. A renaissance man, Life is my art project. An habitual nomad, I roam to evolve. Music and cannabis are my constant companions. Interested in people, i’m always searching for my tribe. The beauty of the wilderness is the closest i’ve come to experiencing Truth.

Love is an Action. Love is the Answer. Love is the Movement.

Part 3: Artists that changed my life..

Immortal Technique

I have an Immortal Technique t-shirt and on the back it says “Only the realest feel this” and this isn’t no typical rap braggadocio, its the truth! Immortal Technique is an inspiration to me not just because of his insane lyrical and freestyle abilities but because of what he is doing with his music. To me he is the most important artist of our generation, i see him as a modern day John Lennon, Fela Kuti or Bob Marley.  For me it is so important to see an artist have a message in their music and even more important to see an artist use their power to create change because far too many people lose their vision as soon as they get a shot at money, power and fame.  Immortal Technique is definitely one of the rappers that is committed to his vision along with some of my other favourites like KRS-One, Dead Prez, Chuck D, Mos Def, Black Thought, Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, Brother Ali, Talib Kweli, K’naan, Michael Franti and Nas.

“The ancient Sassinid Wall overlooks Kabul City, and when the wind blows you can hear the past speak from beyond the grave.”

Short Bio: If you don’t know this guy’s story look into it because its quite incredible. I will give a brief summery of his life to this point from what i remember.  He was born in Lima, Peru but was raised in Harlem, New York.  He was sent to jail for a year on assault-related offences due to his involvement in an altercation between some fellow P.S.U. students and drug dealers.  In jail it seems like he did nothing but read and write, which you can hear in his lyrics which reference everything imaginable.  After being released he enrolled in a political science course and began entering and winning freestyle battles all over new york.

He was named “Unsigned Hype” in the source and was offered some major label deals from Sony and Def Jam, which he turned down preferring to keep creative control and ownership over his music.  He went on to put out two classic albums, Revolutionary Vol. I & II. I first heard him on a DJ Green Lantern song called “Bin Laden” which featured Mos Def and Eminem.  He has since released an an album with Green Lantern called ‘The Third World’, the profits of the album as well as touring and merchandise was used to set up an orphanage with Omeid International (a Non–Profit Human Rights Organization) in Kabul, Afghanistan which is now housing over twenty children. He is currently working on his long awaited album called ‘The Middle Passage’.

Sunday Evening Tea and LP!
Atmosphere (Slug & Ant)are one of the artists that have remained on constant rotation since i first heard the duo back when i was thirteen.  I will keep this short because i am going to do an ‘Artist that Changed My Life’ piece on them.
Anyway i have been listening to the  God Loves Ugly LP all day, it is possibly my favourite Atmosphere album simply because of the amount of classic songs on it.  Lyrically Slug was incredible, there are way to many quotable’s to mention.  My fav tracks are Godlovesugly, Fuck You Lucy, Lovelife and Modern Man’s Hustle.

Sabac- Fight Until The End feat. Immortal Technique

FUCK THE POLICE!

What more can i say?

CunninLynguists - “Never Come Down (The Brownie Song)”

This shit right hurr is my anthem!  Kno created another amazing beat, i love the sample, and Natti’s verse is hilarious.

“Too high, slobbering
Too much pot in the brownie pan
Got me baked faster than the brownies, man
Have you ever been high from the inside out
On the lawn in my boxers like the insides out..”

BlakRoc: Ain’t Nothing Like You (Hoochie Coo) Ft. Mos Def and Jim Jones

Love this song and this video.  Is it just me or do great artists like Mos Def always bring the best out of more average artists like Jim Jones?

Ziggy Marley- Love Is My Religion

Amen!

Common Market- Trouble Is

RA Scion is definitely in competition with Freeway for best beard in rap!

Dope group, dope beat, dope video, ch-ch-check it out!

Blue Scholars- Back Home

This is what real hip-hop is about.

“So next time you see recruiters in your school or your crib,
Tell them thank you for the offer but you’d rather you lived,
We got more than just our bodies to offer,
So fuck a coffin wrapped in red white and blue, withdraw passed due
We disgusted with the fact we pay taxes to build tanks..”

Common feat. Lauryn Hill - Retrospect for Life

From now on i will always think about tonight when i see this video or hear this song.

Don’t you love it when you have a song that reminds you of a specific time?

Johnny Cash- Hurt

Johnny Cash’s last work before he died was by far my favorite.

You can tell by listening to his voice and looking at face as he sings that he lived a full life.  If i die half as rock n’ roll as this man, i will be happy.
