Mistah Rapsey is my name..
staying underground
is the experience..

I’ve been traveling since my youth searching for experiences of truth. An old soul back again to discover what I left uncovered. I love to love and live to laugh. Enrolled in a school called Knowledge of Self. Paying attention is my drug. Learning to live Life like music and flow with the rhythm, careful not to miss a beat. A renaissance man, Life is my art project. An habitual nomad, I roam to evolve. Music and cannabis are my constant companions. Interested in people, i’m always searching for my tribe. The beauty of the wilderness is the closest i’ve come to experiencing Truth.

Part 2: Artists that changed my life..

Bob Marley

When i was nine or ten Bob Marley was my idol, he was the first artist i really listened to a lot and memorized the songs of.  Even back then I could tell this was something more than just music, it felt like a movement, like he was fighting to change the world.  I still look up to Bob Marley for what he managed to accomplish with music in his lifetime and his philosophy on peace, love and life.  My oldest sister was the person who introduced me to Bob Marley and a lot of other good music like Aesop Rock, The Roots, and Rage Against the Machine.  I remember my sister was going to a Ziggy Marley concert when i was first starting to get into Bob Marley and i asked her if Bob Marley was going to be there! I still remember walking out of the room after she told me he was dead and having my eyes start to water up. My taste in music is very diverse but i listen to hip-hop probably around eighty percent of time, but Bob Marley & the Wailers stay in constant rotation in that mix.                                                                              One Love

“Look, I’ve never had a dream in my life
Because a dream is what you wanna do, but still haven’t pursued
I knew what I wanted and did it till it was done
So i’ve been the dream that I wanted to be since day one!”

Aesop Rock is an incredible songwriter unfortunately like most hip-hop lyricists his talent gets overlooked.  If i was to say he is a better songwriter than Bob Dylan people would think it was ridiculous, but to me he is..

Life’s not a bitch,
Life is a bee-otch who keeps the villagers circling the marketplace out searching for the G-spot!
Maybe she didn’t feel y’all shared any similar interests.
Or maybe you’re just an asshole. And maybe I’m just an asshole.

Questioned about his lyrical style in an interview, Aesop Rock responded:

It’s probably because it’s not the most accessible music in the world. It may pose a slight challenge to the listener beyond your average pop song. I’m no genius by a long shot, but these songs are not nonsensical, that’s pretty preposterous. I’d have to be a genius to pull this many nonsensical records over people’s eyes. It’s not exactly fast food but when people pretend I’m just spewing non-sequiturs and gibberish I can’t help but think they simply haven’t listened and are regurgitating some rumor they’ve heard about me. Even if it’s not laid out in perfect sentences—is any rap?—you’d have to be an idiot to not at least grasp a few things from these songs. Or have had no interest in pulling anything from them in the first place.

Aesop Rock live in Edinburgh, Scotland (my sister took these)
My oldest sister is the person who got me into Aesop Rock.  A few years ago when she was living in Bristol, England she flew to Dublin, Ireland to see Aesop Rock for one night and then flew to Edinburgh, Scotland to see him the next night!  If that’s not a fan, i don’t know what is!  She met Aesop Rock, Rob Sonic, DJ Big Wiz and the tour manager at the first show and hung out with them.  When they found out she was also going to the show in Scotland, she was invited to go on the whole European tour to sell their merchandise after shows.  She loved her job so she didn’t go on tour.  I was living on Vancouver Island at the time, or i would have gone with her to the shows and i definitely would have gone on tour with them.  Fuck My Life!

I've never heard Aesop Rock? I just know he has a good lyrical rep. Any song suggestions?

Aesop Rock is an emcee/producer from New York.  His style is like no one else, if you can get used to it he will become a favorite really fast.  I have been listening to his music since i was very young and i am still picking up new meanings and references in his songs.  His most recent project was producing  Slug & Murs lastest album Felt 3: A Tribute to Rosie Perez.

I would suggest getting a copy of his album ‘Labor Days’.  These are some of my favorite Aesop Rock songs, i have a lot.

  • Daylight
  • Labor
  • No Regrets
  • Bent Life
  • Same Space (The Tugboat Complex Part 2)
  • Holy Smokes
  • Shere Khan
  • Alchemy (Feat. Blueprint)
  • None Shall Pass (prod. by Blockhead)
  • The Harbor Is Yours (prod. by Blockhead)

Love the sample and his rhyming is ridiculous.

For the love of my personal practice I reside
where obstructive fluxes and societal withdrawal collides
Slide fuel by the fury
Spun a ring around my honor
but the opulence took shelter in my horror
Melancholy masquerade
Cast amongst the braiding of belligerence
and blazing terror that blew the lock down off my placement
I stay special agent till the sky falls
Reverse the curse till my fellow lost children disperse”
